The Tulsa Spirit
In November 1907, when Oklahoma became the 46th state, Tulsa was already on its way to becoming well-established as the "Oil Capital of the Nation." The first bridge across the Arkansas had been built, the Glenpool oil field was operating and the city of Tulsa had a population of 7,298. Today we are almost 900,000 strong and we are ready for a party!
A year long celebration kicks off November 9-19, 2006 in Tulsa with concerts, expos, exhibits, a parade and eye-popping fireworks and laser displays.
The centerpiece of Tulsa’s celebration of the Oklahoma Centennial will be local projects that become the city’s new landmarks for the 21st century. In 2004, the Centennial Commission in Tulsa invited the public to submit new projects that have the potential to further define Tulsa’s landscape and character. These special projects will enhance the livability of our city and revitalize the Tulsa Spirit.
In celebrating the Oklahoma Centennial we are given a rare opportunity to shape the 21st Century as our Founders did in the 20th Century. It is our turn. The Tulsa Spirit is in our hands today and for all the tomorrow.
